피닉스 한인회 진재만 회장, 에스퍼 전 국방장관 강연에 참석

 

 

Mark T Esper 미국 29대 국방장관이 피닉스 외교위원회 초청으로 1월 26일 오후 5시부터 APS 본사 건물 2층 강당에서 미 국방 현안에 대한 질의응답 강연을 가졌다.

"같히 갑시다"라고 인사를 나눈 Mark T Esper 전 국방장관은 현재 우크라이나와 러시아 전쟁 중 전략과 미국의 우크라이나 군사지원을 비릇해서 중국의 대만침략 전쟁 시나리오, 한반도 내 북한의 핵시설에 대한 미국의 외교적 전략 등 다양한 미국 군사 할동에 대해 질의응답을 나눴다.

행사에서 진재만 피닉스 한인회장은 북한 김정은 위원장이 중국의 북한 침략 우려로 두려움을 갖고 있고 남한에 주둔 중인 미군엔 오히려 긍정적이라는데 외교를 활용해 미군을 북한에 주둔시켜 남북통일을 앞당길 수 있는 방안은 없냐고 질의했다.

Mark T Esper 전 국방장관은 그런 이야기가 나돌지만 중국의 완충지대인 북한이 세습제도에 물들어 있고 김정은 위원장이 미군을 북한에 주둔토록 인정하는 일은 쉽지 않을 것이라고 분석했다.

Mark T Esper, the 29th Secretary of Defense of the United States, was invited by the Phoenix Council on Foreign Relations to give a question-and-answer talk on U.S. defense issues on Jan. 26 at 5 p.m. in the second floor auditorium of the APS headquarters building.

 

Greeted with a "let's go together" greeting, former Secretary of Defense Mark T. Esper answered questions on a variety of U.S. military initiatives, including strategy during the current war between Ukraine and Russia, U.S. military assistance to Ukraine, war scenarios for a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, and U.S. diplomatic strategy toward North Korea's nuclear facilities on the Korean Peninsula.

 

At the event, Jin Jae-man, president of the Korean American Association of Phoenix, asked if there is a way to use diplomacy to keep U.S. troops in North Korea to speed up the reunification of the two Koreas, given that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un fears a Chinese invasion of North Korea and is positive about the U.S. military presence in South Korea.

 

Former Secretary of Defense Mark T. Esper said that there is talk of such a thing, but it would be difficult to get Kim Jong-un to allow U.S. troops to be stationed in North Korea, which is a buffer zone for China, as it is steeped in hereditary rule.
