아리조나주 제 20대 한인회 마성일 회장과 임애훈 이사, 박영욱 대외협력 부회장은 1월 28일 오후 1시 피닉스 E Broadway Rd에 위치한 미국 재향군인회 65지역회관(American Legion Post 65)에서 있은 아리조나주 재향군인 지원부 장관(Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services) 완다 라이트 예비역 대령(Col. Wanda Wright)의 이임식에 참석하여 그가 지난 8년간 Doug Ducey 정부 하에서 아리조나 한인회와 아리조나 한국 재향군인들을 위해 노력해준 노고에 감사하며 감사장을 전달했다.
완다 라이트 대령은 아리조나 주정부에서 재향군인 지원부가 생긴 이래 부서 수장으로 임명된 최초의 흑인 여성으로 지난 8년간 Doug Ducey 정부 하에서 재향군인 주택사업 등을 포함한 아리조나 재향군인들의 복지 향상을 위해 많은 노력을 기울여 왔다.
특히 한인회와 한인재향군인들과의 긴밀한 유대관계를 통해 양국의 재향군인들이 우의를 증진토록 하는 일에도 크게 기여했다.
시간 제한을 둘 정도로 많은 관계 기관 대표들의 축사가 이어진 후 완다 라이트 장관은 이임사를 통해 지난 8년간의 업무를 회고하며 재향군인회와 주정부, 관계 기관들의 적극적인 지원과 협조로 자신의 직무를 성공적으로 마칠 수 있었다며 모든 이들에게 고마움을 표했다.
그리고 옆에서 늘 힘이 되어준 가족들에게 감사의 마음을 전하는 것으로 이임사를 마쳤고, 참석한 모든 이들은 기립박수로 그의 퇴임을 축하해 줬다.
마성일 회장은 순서가 마친 후에 별도로 완다 대령과 환담하며 감사장을 전달하고 앞으로도 별도의 모임을 갖는 등 한인회와 지속적으로 연락하며 한인회가 계획 중인 여러 재향군인 행사에 적극적인 협조를 당부했다.
한편 아리조나주 한인회 마성일 회장은 지난 1월 27일 주 로스앤젤레스 총영사관에서 김영완 총영사, 미주한인회 서남부연합회 회장단과 2023년 현안업무에 대한 보고와 면담시간을 가졌다.
이 자리에서 마성일 회장은 아리조나 영사업무를 기존 스케쥴보다 2회 이상 늘려줄 것을 건의했고 6월 보훈의 달 행사와 국가 독립유공자 보훈행사 계획에 대해 설명하면서 지원을 요청했다.
이에 총영사관 측에서는 행사는 예산과맞물리는 것이어서 예산범위 내에서 최대한 지원토록 하겠다고 답변했다.

Wanda Wright attended his retirement ceremony and presented him with a certificate of appreciation for his hard work on behalf of the Arizona Korean American Association and Arizona Korean veterans over the past eight years under the Doug Ducey administration.
Colonel Wanda Wright is the first African-American woman to be appointed as the head of the Department of Veterans Affairs since it was created by the State of Arizona, and she has made many efforts to improve the welfare of Arizona veterans, including veterans housing projects, under the Doug Ducey administration over the past eight years.
In particular, she has developed strong ties with the Korean American Association and Korean American veterans to promote friendship between veterans of both countries.
After congratulatory remarks from representatives of many related organizations, Secretary Wanda Wright reflected on her work over the past eight years and expressed her gratitude to everyone, saying that she was able to successfully complete her duties with the active support and cooperation of the Department of Veterans Affairs, the state government, and related organizations.
She concluded her remarks by thanking her family for their support, and everyone in attendance congratulated her with a standing ovation.
After the ceremony, Chairman Ma Sung-il met with Colonel Wanda separately to deliver a certificate of appreciation and asked her to keep in touch with the Korean American Association by having separate meetings in the future, and to actively cooperate with the various veterans' events planned by the Korean American Association.
Meanwhile, on January 27, Chairman Ma Sung-il of the Korean American Association of Arizona held a meeting with Consul General Kim Young-wan and the President of the Korean American Federation of America Southwest at the Consulate General in Los Angeles to report on current affairs for 2023.
During the meeting, Chairman Ma recommended increasing the number of consular visits to Arizona to two more than the current schedule and requested support for the upcoming Veterans Month event in June and the National Independence Day celebration.
The Consulate General responded that the events were in line with the budget and that they would support them as much as possible within the budget.
