노인복지회 '2월 경로대학 개강 위한 시니어 만남의 날' 가져

 

 

아리조나 한인 노인복지회(유영구 회장)의 '2월 경로대학 개강을 위한 시니어 만남의 날' 행사가 2월 19일(일) 오후 4시부터 복지회 사무실(코리아 태권도 도장)에서 열렸다.

구세군 글렌데일교회 오관근 사관의 개회기도로 행사는 시작됐다.

국기에 대한 경례, 애국가 제창, 순국선열에 대한 묵념 등 간단한 국민의례가 진행됐다.

유영구 회장은 2월 24일부터 구세군교회와 함께 아리조나 경로대학원 봄학기를 공동주관하게 됐음을 알렸다.

경로대학원에 대한 설명에 나선 오관근 사관은 "여러 가지 이유로 지난 4년 동안 경로대학원이 활발히 진행되지 못했지만 이번 봄학기엔 7주 동안 실시될 예정"이라고 밝히고 "클래스는 2개로 나눠서 운영될 계획"이라고 말했다.

수업은 10시부터 시작해서 30분 찬양예배, 이어 명사 초청 강연, 노인복지회 유정선 문화체육부장이 진행하는 건강체조 그리고 45분 간 2번의 클래스가 있게 된다고 설명한 오 사관은 골프, 탁구, 난타, 우크렐레, 붓글씨, 시민권 취득 준비 및 생활영어, 건강식 조리법/상식, 빙고 등 8개 가량의 수업들이 마련돼 있다고 전했다.

구세군교회가 이전에 있던 장소에서 건물도 많고 시설도 나은 인근 지역으로 2년 전 옮겼으니 착오가 없기를 당부한 오 사관은 한 학기 등록비가 10달러임도 전달했다.

원하는 분들을 대상으로 3월 24일 엘에이로 1박2일 여행도 다녀오게 된다고 오관근 사관은 말하고 여행 경비는 본인이 부담하되 차량편은 구세군 측에서 무료로 제공한다고 덧붙였다.

이번 경로대학원 개강을 계기로 한동안 부진했던 한인 커뮤니티 상대 사역이 탄력을 받게 될 것으로 보여 기대가 크다고 오 사관은 소감을 밝혔다.

경로대학원 학기 기간 중 수업이 있는 요일에 구세군교회는 오전 9시 아시아나 마켓 메사 주차장에서 교회까지 15인승 밴 통학 차편을 운행한다.

유영구 회장은 "구세군교회와 경로대학원 운영을 공동주관하게 됨으로써 노인복지회가 한단계 더 성장한 것 같다"고 말하고 안남복 씨가 새 사무총장직을 맡게 된 것과 장례보험 관련 세미나를 3월 중에 열 계획임을 알렸다.

노인복지회 윤국선 부회장은 "나이가 들수록 소일거리가 있어야 인생에 활력도 생기고 건강 유지에도 도움이 된다"며 "글렌데일, 썬시티 등 주변에서 찾아보면 우리도 일주일에 한두번 돈도 벌면서 일할 수 있는 소일거리가 있다"고 전했다.

소일거리를 찾으시는 분들은 한인 노인복지회나 한인회로 연락을 주시면 정보를 제공해 드리겠다고 그는 말했다.

유영구 회장은 2월 26일 일요일 오후 2시부터 4시까지 피닉스 다운타운에 위치한 일명 '한국 종각'에서 열릴 아리조나주 한인회 주최 3.1절 기념식에 참여를 독려하기도 했다.

이어 유정선 문화체육부장 지도 하에 의자에 앉아 손쉽게 할 수 있는 스트레칭과 한국 가요에 맞춰 실시된 건강체조 시간이 진행됐고 단체 사진촬영 후 참석자들은 만찬을 즐기며 환담을 나눴다.

 

 

 

 

The Arizona Korean American Senior Welfare Association's (President Yoo Young-koo) "Senior Meeting Day for the February Pathways College Opening" was held on Sunday, February 19, at the welfare association office (Korea Taekwondo Dojo) from 4:00 pm.

 

The event began with an opening prayer by Chaplain Kwan Geun Oh of the Salvation Army Glendale Church.

 

A brief national ceremony was held, including saluting the flag, singing the national anthem, and a moment of silence for the fallen soldiers.

 

Yoo announced that the Salvation Army will be co-hosting the spring semester of the Arizona Pathways Graduate School, beginning Feb. 24.

 

"For various reasons, the program has not been active for the past four years, but this spring semester will be held for seven weeks," said Oh, who explained the program, adding that the classes will be divided into two sections.

 

The classes will start at 10 a.m. with a 30-minute praise service, followed by a lecture by a celebrity guest speaker, healthy gymnastics led by Yoo Jung-sun, head of the Culture and Sports Department at the Senior Citizens Welfare Association, and two 45-minute classes. Oh said there are about eight classes, including golf, table tennis, nanta, ukulele, calligraphy, citizenship preparation and life English, healthy food recipes/common sense, and bingo.

 

Noting that the Salvation Army Church moved from its previous location to a nearby area with more buildings and better facilities two years ago, Oh said the registration fee for a semester is $10.

 

There will also be an overnight trip to Los Angeles on March 24 for those who want to go, Oh said, adding that students will have to pay for their own transportation, but the Salvation Army will provide it for free.

 

With the opening of the pathway graduate school, the ministry's work with the Korean community, which has been sluggish for some time, will gain momentum, Oh said.

 

On days when classes are in session during the pathway graduate school semester, The Salvation Army will provide a 15-passenger van transportation service from the Asiana Market Mesa parking lot to the church at 9 a.m.

 

"I think the senior citizen welfare association has grown to the next level by having the Salvation Army Church co-manage the senior citizen graduate school," said Yoo, who also announced that Ahn Nam-bok has taken over as the new secretary general and plans to hold a seminar on funeral insurance in March.

 

"As we get older, we need to have small jobs to keep us energized and healthy," said Yoon Kook-sun, vice president of the Senior Citizens Welfare Association. "If you look around Glendale, Sun City, and other places, there are small jobs that we can do once or twice a week while earning money."

Yoo also encouraged people to participate in a March 1 ceremony hosted by the Korean American Association of Arizona on Sunday, Feb. 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the so-called "Korean Jonggak" in downtown Phoenix.

 

After a group photo, attendees enjoyed dinner and mingled with each other, followed by easy chair stretches and health exercises to Korean songs, led by Yoo.
