수원시 관계자들, 자매결연 관련 후속조치 협의차 피닉스 방문

 

 

본국의 수원시 관계자들이 3월 2일과 3일 양일간 아리조나주 피닉스를 방문했다.

수원시 관계자들의 이번 피닉스 방문 목적은 지난 2021년 10월 28일 체결된 양 도시 간의 자매결연과 관련한 후속 조치들을 협의하기 위한 것으로 알려졌다.

수원시 조청식 제1부시장을 필두로, 김기배 체육교육문화관광 부장, 김형주 기획부장, 김정호 부시장 비서관, 이성석 국제교류전담 주무관 등이 피닉스를 찾았다.

아리조나주 한인회 전 회장이자 피닉스시 산하 자매결연 수원위원회 위원인 강선화 씨 그리고 한인회 전 사무총장인 한이섭 씨가 이들의 일정을 도왔다.

일행은 아리조나주 한인회 마성일 회장, 노인복지회 유영구 회장과도 만남의 시간을 가지고 양 도시 간 교류협력에 관한 의견을 나누기도 했다.

수원시 관계자들은 2일 케이트 가예고 피닉스 시장, 3일 야사민 앤사리 피닉스 부시장을 각각 예방하고 환담을 나눴다.

케이트 가예고 시장과의 환담에서는 가예고 시장의 올 7월 한국 방문과 관련한 내용이 다뤄진 것으로 전해졌다.

또한 무공해 친환경도시를 추구하는 양 도시 간의 공통관심사에 대해서도 이야기가 이어졌다. 가예고 시장은 피닉스와 대만 혹은 일본 간을 잇는 동북아 직항노선 개설을 추진 중이라고 밝히고 하지만 아직 피닉스-한국 간 직항노선에 대한 구체적인 계획은 없어 아쉽게 생각한다고 발언한 것으로 알려졌다. 

가예고 시장은 또한 프로풋볼팀 아리조나 카디널스 구단의 홈구장을 만들기 위해 예전에 땅을 사뒀는데 글렌데일시에 구장 유치에 밀렸다고 말하고 하지만 해당 부지에 Tgen 바이오 단지가 들어서 지금은 엄청난 성공을 거두고 있다는 후일담을 나누기도 했다.

수원시 관계자들은 피닉스에 위치한 UofA의 바이오텍, 템피의 ASU 대학 등을 둘러보며 견학했으며, 수원에 연고지를 둔 한국프로야구팀 kt 위즈가 훈련 중인 투산을 찾아 선수단을 격려하기도 했다.

피닉스시의 수원위원회에서 교육부문을 담당하고 있는 강선화 위원에 따르면 수원시는 ASU 대학과 한국의 아주대 법대 학생들 간 교류, 세미나를 계획하고 있으며, 또한 템피에 본사를 앰코(Amkor)의 한국 공장 유치에도 큰 관심을 갖고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.

한편 수원시 국제교류센터는 ‘2023 피닉스 청소년 대사 교류 프로그램’에 참가할 본국의 고등학생 3명을 오는 19일까지 모집 중이다.

피닉스시와 피닉스 자매도시위원회가 주최하는 ‘2023 피닉스 청소년 대사 교류 프로그램’은 피닉스시(7월 16일~8월 5일)와 수원시(8월 6~26일)에서 열린다.

피닉스 청소년 대사 교류 프로그램은 양 도시의 학생이 홈스테이를 기반으로 상호 방문하며 현지 문화를 체험하는 것이다.

선발된 학생은 피닉스시가 자매도시 고등학생을 대상으로 진행하는 ‘Youth Ambassador Exchange Program’(청소년 대사 교류 프로그램)에 수원시 대표로 참여하게 된다.

수원 지역내 고등학교 재학생 중 2006~2007년생이 참여할 수 있다. 

영어로 소통할 수 있고 7월 16일부터 8월 5일까지 3주 동안 피닉스시 홈스테이 가정에서 체류할 수 있어야 한다. 

피닉스시는 수원시의 18번째 국제자매·우호도시이자 북미지역 첫 자매도시다.

 

 

 

 

Officials from Suwon, South Korea, visited Phoenix, Arizona, on March 2 and 3.

 

The purpose of the visit to Phoenix was to discuss follow-up measures related to the twinning agreement between the two cities, which was signed on October 28, 2021.

 

Led by First Vice Mayor Cho Cheong-sik, Kim Ki-bae, head of the Department of Physical Education, Culture and Tourism, Kim Hyung-joo, head of the Department of Planning, Kim Jung-ho, secretary to the deputy mayor, and Lee Sung-seok, head of the Department of International Exchange, traveled to Phoenix.

 

Ms. Kang Sun-hwa, a former president of the Korean American Association of Arizona and a member of the Sister City of Suwon Committee, and Mr. Han Yi-seop, former secretary general of the Korean American Association of Arizona, assisted them.

 

The delegation also met with Ma Sung-il, president of the Korean American Association of Arizona, and Yoo Young-gu, president of the Senior Citizens Association, to discuss exchange and cooperation between the two cities.

 

Suwon officials met with Phoenix Mayor Kate Gayago on the 2nd and Phoenix Vice Mayor Yasamin Ansari on the 3rd.

 

The meeting with Mayor Kate Gaylego reportedly covered topics related to Mayor Gaylego's upcoming visit to Korea in July.

 

They also discussed the common interests of both cities in pursuing a zero-emission, green city. While Mayor Gaylego said that Phoenix is working to establish nonstop flights to Northeast Asia between Taiwan and Japan, she reportedly expressed disappointment that there are no concrete plans for a direct flight between Phoenix and South Korea.

 

Mayor Guevara also said that the city of Glendale lost out to the Arizona Cardinals when they purchased land to build a new stadium, but he later said that the Tgen bio-complex was built on the site and is now a huge success.

 

Suwon officials also toured UofA's biotech in Phoenix, ASU University in Tempe, and visited Tucson, where the Suwon-based Korean professional baseball team, the KT Wiz, is training.

 

According to Sunghwa Kang, who serves on the education committee for Phoenix's Suwon Committee, Suwon is planning exchanges and seminars between students at ASU and Korea's Ajou University School of Law, and is also very interested in attracting a Korean plant for Amkor, which is headquartered in Tempe.

 

Meanwhile, the Suwon International Exchange Center is looking for three high school students from their home countries to participate in the 2023 Phoenix Youth Ambassador Exchange Program.

 

Hosted by the City of Phoenix and the Phoenix Sister City Committee, the 2023 Phoenix Youth Ambassador Exchange Program will be held in Phoenix (July 16-Aug. 5) and Suwon (Aug. 6-26).

 

The Phoenix Youth Ambassador Exchange Program allows students from both cities to visit each other on a homestay basis and experience local culture.

 

Selected students will participate as Suwon's representatives in the Youth Ambassador Exchange Program, which Phoenix hosts for high school students from its sister city.

 

The program is open to high school students in the Suwon area who were born between 2006 and 2007.

 

They must be able to communicate in English and live with a Phoenix host family for three weeks from July 16 to August 5.

 

Phoenix is Suwon's 18th international sister and friendship city and the first in North America.
