2023 AAU 아리조나 지역예선 & 챔피언십 대회 '성황'

 

 

AAU(The Amateur Athletic Union) 태권도 전국대회 출전권이 걸린 아리조나 지역예선전 겸 챔피언십 대회가 1월 28일(토) 오전 9시부터 길버트 소재 윌리엄스 필드 고등학교 체육관에서 열렸다.

이 대회에서 좋은 성적을 거둔 선수들은 올림픽 미국 대표팀도 가능하며 AAU 대표선수 자격으로 모든 국제오픈대회에 참여할 수도 있다.

아리조나 예선을 거쳐 전국대회에 출전한 선수들은 이미 2021년에도 팀 품새, 페어 품새, 개인품새, 올림픽 스파링 등 종목에서 금메달 4개, 동메달 2개를 수상하는 등 좋은 성적을 보이고 있다.

작년 5월 사단법인 세계스포츠위원회(WorldSC 위원장 서현석)이 6번째로 설립한 해외지부인 미국서부스포츠위원회(USA West Sport Committee)를 이끌고 있는 김현 회장이 이번 대회도 주최했다.

김현 회장은 아리조나 아마추어청소년스포츠재단 회장, 아리조나태권도스쿨 대표, 아리조나 아마추어선수연맹(AAU) 태권도 회장직도 겸하고 있다.

올해 대회에는 아리조나주를 비롯해 워싱턴, 캘리포니아, 네바다, 콜로라도, 뉴멕시코 등지의 30여개 도장에서 340명 가량 선수들이 트래디셔널/오픈 품새, 월드클래스(블랙벨트 이상) 태권도 개인 스포츠 품새, 페어 품새, 팀 품새 그리고 올림픽 스파링 등 다양한 부문에 출전해 그간 갈고 닦은 기량을 바탕으로 치열한 경쟁을 펼쳤다.

오전 경기를 마치고 낮 12시 즈음 데모팀의 시범이 있은 뒤 개막식이 시작됐다.

미국 국가 제창, 선수단 및 심판진 대표선서가 있었다.

미 서부스포츠위원회 회장에 임명하는 증서가 김현 회장에게 전달됐고, 세계스포츠위원회, 국기원 장려상, 미 대통령 봉사상, 앤디 빅스 아리조나 연방하원의원상 등이 차례로 수상자들에게 수여됐다.

김현 회장은 "참여하는 곳이 늘어 대회가 점점 더 활성화되고 있지만 아리조나 지역 도장들의 참여가 부족한 것은 아쉬운 점"이라 지적하고 "함께 동참해 태권도 발전에 힘을 보태면 좋겠다"는 바램을 나타냈다.

The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Tae Kwon Do National Championships, an Arizona regional qualifier and championship meet, was held on Saturday, Jan. 28, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Williams Field High School gymnasium in Gilbert.

 

Athletes who perform well at the event will be eligible for the U.S. Olympic Team, as well as represent the AAU at all international open competitions.

 

The athletes who qualified for nationals through the Arizona qualifiers have already had a strong showing in 2021, winning four gold and two bronze medals in events including team vault, pair vault, individual vault, and Olympic sparring.

 

The tournament was also organized by Kim, who heads the USA West Sport Committee, the sixth overseas branch of the World Sports Council (WorldSC), which was founded by WorldSC Chairman Seo Hyun-seok in May last year.

 

Mr. Kim also serves as the President of the Arizona Amateur Youth Sports Foundation, President of the Arizona Taekwondo School, and President of the Arizona Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Taekwondo.

 

More than 340 athletes from more than 30 dojos in Arizona, Washington, California, Nevada, Colorado, and New Mexico competed in a variety of categories, including Traditional/Open Poomsae, World Class (black belt and above) Taekwondo Individual Sport Poomsae, Pairs Poomsae, Team Poomsae, and Olympic Sparring.

 

After the morning competition, the opening ceremony began around 12 noon with a demonstration by the demonstration team.

 

It included the singing of the U.S. national anthem and the swearing in of the athletes and officials.

 

A certificate appointing Kim as president of the Western Sports Council was presented to Kim, followed by awards from the World Sports Council, the Korean Flag Institute, the U.S. Presidential Service Award, and the Arizona Congressman Andy Biggs Award.

 

"The tournament is becoming more and more active with more and more participants, but the lack of participation from local dojos in Arizona is disappointing," said Kim, adding, "I hope we can join together and help develop taekwondo."
