피닉스 한인회, 주 교육감 초청하고 전통공연도 펼치며 3.1절 기념

 

 

피닉스 한인회(진재만 회장) 주최 '제104주년 3.1절 기념행사'가 3월 1일(수) 낮 12시부터 아시아나 마켓 메사 푸드코트에서 열렸다.

당초 행사는 웨슬리 볼린 메모리얼 플라자 내 한국전 참전 희생자 추모 건축물인 일명 '종각'에서 열릴 계획이었지만 쌀쌀해진 기상 여건 등을 고려해 장소를 변경해 치뤄졌다.

진재만 회장은 개회사를 통해 3.1절 배경과 그 의의를 간략히 영어로 소개했다.

구세군 글렌데일 교회 오관근 사관의 개회기도 후 국기에 대한 경례, 미국국가와 애국가 제창, 순국선열과 호국영령에 대한 묵념 등 국민의례의 시간이 진행됐다.

이어 특별 게스트로 초청된 교육부 장관격인 아리조나주 교육계 최고 수장 톰 혼 주 교육감이 인사말에 나섰다.

톰 혼 주 교육감은 2003년부터 2011년까지 주 교육감을 역임했고 2011년부터 2015년까지는 아리조나주 법무부 장관을 지낸 바 있다.

혼 교육감은 작년 선거에 승리하면서 주 교육감직에 다시 복귀했다.

한국 학생들의 높은 학력수준에 대해 언급한 그는 "학생들의 학업적 성취에 포커스를 맞출 것이며 이를 통해 아리조나의 교육 수준 향상이 이뤄질 것으로 생각한다"고 말하고 또한 교내 인종차별과 같은 부당행위엔 적극 대처하겠다는 입장을 밝혔다.

아리조나주 한국 명예영사 마크 앤더슨 씨는 축사에서 "104년 전 한국에서 있었던 독립운동은 결코 쉽게 일어날 수 없는 일"이라며 유관순 열사와 같이 자신을 희생하며 성취한 독립과 자유의 의미를 우리 후세들에게 잘 전달해야 한다고 강조했다.

세계교민청 아리조나 대사를 맡고 있는 전충희 은퇴목사는 "김대중-노무현-문재인 전 대통령은 대한민국 자유민주주의 체제를 다 없애버리고 북한식 공산화를 제도화 하려고 50여년 동안 노력해왔고 그 결과 실제로 구석구석 그렇게 되어 있다"고 주장하고 "오직 윤석열 대통령만이 자유민주주의자요, 그 제도를 회복하려고 노력하고 있다는 안타까운 사실을 우리 이민자들이 알아야 한다. 전광훈 목사를 중심으로 대한민국을 자유민주주의로 하나가 되게 해 세계 G2 반열에 올리자는 것이 세계교민청의 목표"라고 소개했다.

이어 아리랑 한국 전통 예술원(안순희 단장) 단원 8명이 장고를 연주하며 아리랑을 불렀고, 안순희 단장은 단독공연으로 북춤과 장고춤을 선보이기도 했다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The "104th Anniversary 3.1 Day Celebration" hosted by the Korean American Association of Phoenix (President Jae Man Jin) was held at the Asiana Market Mesa Food Court on Wednesday, March 1, starting at 12 noon.

 

The event was originally planned to be held at the Jonggak, a memorial to the victims of the Korean War, in the Wesley Boleyn Memorial Plaza, but the venue was changed to accommodate the cooler weather conditions.

 

In his opening remarks, Mr. Jae-Man Jin briefly introduced the background of Section 3.1 and its significance in English.

 

After the opening prayer by Chaplain Kwan Geun Oh of the Salvation Army Glendale Church, a time of national rituals was held, including saluting the flag, singing the U.S. national anthem and national anthem, and observing a moment of silence for the fallen soldiers and patriotic decrees.

 

Special guest, Arizona State Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Tom Horne, the state's top education official, then delivered remarks.

 

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne served as state superintendent from 2003 to 2011 and as Arizona's attorney general from 2011 to 2015.

 

Mr. Horne returned to the state superintendency after winning his election last year.

 

Noting the high quality of Korean students, he said, "I will focus on student academic achievement, and I think that will improve the quality of education in Arizona." He also vowed to address misconduct such as racism in schools.

 

In his remarks, Mr. Mark Anderson, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Korea in Arizona, said, "The independence movement in Korea 104 years ago did not happen easily," and emphasized the importance of passing on to future generations the meaning of independence and freedom achieved through the sacrifices of people like Yoo Yoo Soon.

 

"Former presidents Kim Dae-jung, Roh Moo-hyun, and Moon Jae-in have been trying for more than 50 years to wipe out the liberal democratic system in Korea and institutionalize North Korean-style communism, and the result is that it is actually everywhere," said retired pastor Chung-hee Jeon, who serves as an ambassador to Arizona for the World Affairs Council. It is the goal of the World Affairs Office to unite Korea as a liberal democracy under the leadership of Rev. Kwang Hoon Jeon, and to make Korea one of the G2 countries in the world."

 

Afterward, eight members of the Arirang Korean Traditional Arts Center (led by Ahn Soon-hee) sang Arirang while playing the jango, and Ahn Soon-hee performed a solo performance of drum and jango dancing.
