"부처님 말씀따라 열심히 정진해야" 정우 큰스님 감로사 특별법회

 

 

아리조나 감로사 회주인 정우 큰스님의 특별법회가 3월 12일(일) 오전 10시 30분부터 감로사 법당에서 열렸다.

통도사 서울포교당 구룡사 회주이기도 한 아산 정우 큰스님은 홍법문화재단 이사장, 미국 뉴욕 원각사 이사장직을 맡고 있기도 하며 조계종 제3대 군종특별교구장을 역임한 바 있다.

법회는 염송, 삼귀의, 찬불가, 반야심경 독경 등의 의식순으로 진행됐다.

불자들이 입정한 가운데 정우 큰스님은 "아리조나 감로사에 대한 마음은 가지고 있으면서도 여기 주지스님이 계시고 또한 코로나 등의 핑계로 여러분들을 자주 찾아뵙지 못했다"고 말하고 그간 감로사 주지를 맡았던 종화스님이 해인사에 소임이 있어 작년 말 귀국한 뒤 유곡스님과 자명스님에게 이곳을 잠시 맡아달라고 청을 드렸다는 그간의 사정을 설명했다.

부처님이 35세에 깨달음을 이루시고 난 뒤의 생에 대해 이야기를 전해드리고자 한다고 말한 정우 큰스님은 "부처님은 많은 제자들과 어울리면서 43일 동안 하루에 25~28킬로미터 거리를 이동하시며 불법을 전파하셨다. 이후 45년 간 설법을 이어가신 뒤 80세 노인이 되셨을 때 기원정사를 지나서 부시나가까지는 가지 못하시고 열반에 드셨다"고 전했다.

인도를 방문했다 부다가야에서 오리지널 보리수 나무잎을 보면서 '떨어져 말린 잎은 그 쓸모가 없어지고 나무에 달려 있을 때 쓰임새가 있겠구나' 하는 생각이 들면서 우리도 삶을 사는 동안 복도 짓고 덕도 닦고 지혜도 증진시켜야 한다는 걸 깨달았다고 덧붙였다.

인생이란 결국 이 세상을 떠나게 되어 있다고 한 정우 큰스님은 "하지만 괴롭다거나 외롭다거나 공허하다고 생각하지 말라. 인생은 본디 그러한 것"이라고 법문했다.

부처님이 2월에 열반에 드신 이유는 인생이 항상한 것이 아님을 생명력이 솟아나는 그 시절에 오히려 무상을 대중에게 알려주시기 위한 것이라고 정우 큰스님은 설법했다.

부처님 생의 마지막 순간에 제자들과 있었던 사연을 소개한 정우 큰스님은 부처님이 열반에 드시기 전 슬프하는 제자들에게 '울지 말아라. 가까운 사람과 언젠가는 한 번은 헤어지게 되어 있는 것이 이 세상의 인연이다. 한 번 태어난 것은 반드시 죽기 마련이다. 죽지 않기를 바라는 것은 어리석은 생각이다. 그동안 나를 위해서 애썼고 수고가 많았다. 내가 떠난 뒤에도 더욱더 정진해서 성인의 자리에 오르도록 하라'고 당부하신 부처님의 말씀을 전했다.

열반은 죽음이 아님을 강조하셨다는 게 부처님의 가르침이라고 한 정우 큰스님은 "'내가 떠난 후 나의 가르침을 곧 그대들의 스승으로 삼으라. 모든 것은 무상하니 게으름을 피우지 말고 잘 살아야 한다'라고 하신 부처님의 열반 전 가르침을 전한 뒤 "우리도 열심히 정진해 니르바나에 들 수 있도록 하자"고 말했다.

정우 큰스님은 마지막으로 불자들에게 법당에 좀 더 관심을 가지고 서로 합심해줄 것을 당부하며 법회를 마쳤다.

 

 

 

 

A special Dharma talk by Venerable Jung Woo, President of Gamro Sa Temple in Arizona, was held on Sunday, March 12, at 10:30 a.m. in the Gamro Sa Hall.

 

In addition to being the president of the Guryongsa branch of Tongdosa's Seoul Pogyo-do, he is also the chairman of the Hongnyeom Cultural Foundation and the chairman of the Wongaksa Temple in New York City, USA, and has served as the third special vicar of Jogye Jong.

 

The ceremony consisted of chanting, the Three Jewels, a chant, and a reading of the Vajrayana Sutra.

 

As the Buddhists entered the temple, Venerable Jeongwoo said, "Although I have a heart for Gamro Sa in Arizona, I have not been able to visit you often due to excuses such as the coronavirus," and explained that Venerable Jonghwa, who had been in charge of Gamro Sa, had returned to Korea at the end of last year due to his duties at Haeinsa, and asked Venerable Yugok and Venerable Jaimyung to take charge of the temple for a while.

 

"The Buddha preached the Buddhadharma for 43 days, traveling 25 to 28 kilometers a day, with many disciples, and then continued to preach for 45 years, and when he was 80 years old, he passed through the prayer hall and entered nirvana without reaching Bushinaga," said Jeongwoo, who said he wanted to tell the story of the Buddha's life after his enlightenment at the age of 35.

 

He added that when he visited India and saw the original Bodhi tree leaves at Budhaya, he thought, "The leaves that have fallen and dried are no longer useful, but are still hanging on the tree," and realized that we too should build a path, cultivate virtue, and increase wisdom throughout our lives.

 

"But don't think of it as suffering, loneliness, or emptiness, because that's what life is," he said. That's the way life is," he said.

 

The reason why the Buddha entered nirvana in February was to show the public that life is not what it has always been, but rather that it is impermanent during those times when life is full of vitality, Jungwoo said.

 

Sharing a story about the Buddha's last moments with his disciples, he said that before he entered nirvana, the Buddha told his sad disciples, "Don't cry. It is the nature of this world that you will be separated from your loved ones at some point. Once born, you must die. It is foolish to hope that you will not die. You have labored and toiled for me. Even after my departure, you should continue to work hard to attain sainthood," said the Buddha.

 

The Buddha emphasized that nirvana is not death, and Venerable Jeongwoo said, "'After my departure, take my teachings as your teachers. All things are impermanent, so don't be lazy and live well,'" he said, then shared the Buddha's pre-nirvana teaching, "Let's work hard so that we can enter Nirvana.

 

Finally, Venerable Chung Woo concluded the session by urging Buddhists to pay more attention to the temple and to work together.
